Aleppo
Historically Rich with Middle Eastern Vibrancy
Located in northern Syria and the country's second city, Aleppo is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. It occupies a strategic trading point midway between the Mediterranean Sea and the Middle East.
The older portions of Aleppo are contained within a five kilometre -long wall that features seven gates. The large medieval castle in the city, known as the Citadel of Aleppo, occupies the centre of the city. As an ancient trading centre, Aleppo also has impressive shopping streets and commercial courtyards.
The city retains an air of an Arabian bazaar, with cobbled streets, horse-drawn carts, donkey couriers and winding streets. It's souqs peddle olive soaps, spices, roasting coffee, while the mouth-watering scent of grilled meat sandwiches and shawarmas waft through the air.
The city's most popular and impressive sights include Madrasa Halwiye, Madrasa Faradis and a range of 16th century mosques designed with traditional Ottoman flair, including the Great Mosque of Aleppo. There is also the Citadel, the city's most famous landmark, which is perched on a high mound at the eastern end of the souq. A museum of Popular Tradition, presenting artefacts and life as it was in days' gone by, a National Museum and an atmospheric souq are some of the city's other gems.
