Petra
Ancient Intrigue
Petra was the crowning glory of the Nabatean Empire with a history dating back to the 4th century BC. It is carved out of sandstone mountains and is literally a breathtaking sight, even for regular visitors.
Photograph the Treasury first thing in the morning with all its wonderful shades and shadows. Imagine the atmosphere in the Nabatean amphitheatre, explore the Royal tombs, and ride a donkey up the crumbling steps to the Monastery. Share lunch in a Bedouin tent restaurant with locals and visitors, then hike up to the high place of sacrifice to take in the views.
For a more strenuous hike, consider the trek to Aaron's tomb. The older brother of Moses is buried high up on the mountain and the trek takes seven hours to complete. Unwind at the town's Turkish Ottoman Baths and enjoy the steaming, scrubbing and massage routine. In the evening, head back to Petra to take it in by moonlight and the desert night sky. The route is candlelit and silent until you reach the Treasury, where tea is served accompanied by Bedouin music.
