Bodrum
Ancient Charm with Coastal Fun
The popular resort of Bodrum is the South Aegean's most attractive resort, described by Homer as 'The land of eternal blue'. The hillside is covered in painted villas adorned with bougainvillea. Narrow streets wind their way down to the sea, and the peaceful setting of its twin harbours offer shelter for yachts.
Hop on a local boat for a tailor-made trip to nearby islands or the pristine beaches and seaside restaurants dispersed along the breathtaking coastline. Visit the 15th century Crusader Castle of St Peter that dominates the town and which now houses the interesting Museum of Underwater Archaeology, then head to the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the world's Seven Wonders. An equally spectacular day out can be enjoyed at Pamukkale, with its rock formations, caves and springs.
Shop at the quaint craft market on Tuesdays or scour the many shops lining the narrow streets for carpets, leather ware, silver or gold jewellery and souvenirs. Dine at Denizhan, a little out of town restaurant between Konacik and Ortakent, a favourite among locals and visitors, which serves delicious traditional Turkish food.
