Hamburg
Land of Art and Music
Founded in the ninth century, Hamburg is the second largest port in Europe. Although it is said that hamburgers originated here, the city is better known for its musical heritage - both Mendelssohn and Brahms were born here. The city offers numerous retreat opportunities to parks and lakes in the area. Its architecture is extremely striking and many of the old buildings have been well preserved.
For a good overview of the city, dine at the revolving restaurant at the Hamburg Television Tower, the tallest building in Hamburg. After dinner, catch the sound and light extravaganza at the fountain show within the Planten un Blomen Park. This green belt extends from the city centre all the way to the harbour and includes a Japanese garden, an apothecary's garden, lakes and greenhouses. Enjoy the lively spectacle each weekend at the waterfront 'Fischmarkt' or marvel at the gothic St. Jakobi Church.
For art lovers, the Hamburger Kunsthalle houses a considerable collection of paintings and sculptures. Hamburg is a wonderfully cultured and attractive destination.
