Hoi An

Old World Charm

Hoi An, once known as Faifo, was a major international port in the 16th and 17th centuries, and the foreign influences are discernible to this day. While the serious shipping business has long since moved, the heart of the city is still the Old Town, full of winding lanes and Chinese-styled shophouses, which is particularly atmospheric in the evening as the sun goes down. While most shops cater to tourists, the area has been largely preserved and renovations have proceeded carefully.

Walk around the Old Town and meander across the Japanese Covered Bridge linking the Japanese and Chinese quarters, with figures of dogs on one side and monkeys on the other. Explore the colourful waterfront market with its unique trinkets, fabrics, lanterns and clothing, then be mesmerized by the paper lanterns and candles floating down the river after the sun has set.

Relax on Cua Dai beach; see the Cham ruins in the jungle and the Marble Mountains or view Vietnamese art collections on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street. For a delicious treat, try the White Rose - a local delicacy resembling a shrimp dumpling.
