Hanoi
Ancient City with a Rich Cultural Heritage
Walking around Hanoi will give you a feeling of going back a few centuries. Life works on a slower pace here and simple methods are still used for daily chores. The ancient quarter's charming streets are full of old houses, temples and blossoming peach trees, and the city also has several appealing lakes.
Visit the fascinating Temple of Literature founded in 1070 to honour scholars, shop at the non-profit outlet Craft Link or enjoy a meal at restaurant Koto. The Museum of Ethnology focuses on Vietnam's ethnic groups and it is advisable to visit this before heading to Sapa or Mai Chau so that you understand the local customs. On an early morning, walk around Hoan Kiem or Bay Mau lakes to observe local residents doing their morning exercise practises of badminton and tai chi.
Take in a traditional water puppetry show at the Municipal Water Puppet Theatre, located alongside the Hoan Kiem Lake but be warned that if you are seated in the front row, you may get wet!
