Founded in the 16th century by the Portuguese, Galle reached the height of its development in the 18th century, before the arrival of the British. This example of a fortified city built by Europeans in South and South-East Asia, perfectly shows the interaction between European architectural styles and South Asian traditions.
Soak up the 300-year old Dutch heritage amid the fort and many historical buildings. The Dutch Fort dates back to 1669 and captures some of the atmosphere of the former days. Visit Koggala, where famous local author Martin Wickramasinghe's house has become a museum displaying traditional folk items. Take a boat trip in the lagoon and Koggala Lake to see many of its small islands, which are popular for bird watching. Relax on the beach at Unawatuna or watch the silt fishermen at sunset at Ahangama.
