Penang
Pearl of Southeast Asia
The island of Penang has a diverse ethnic mix of Chinese, Malays and Indians and is known for its tolerant, peaceful society. The large island offers an interesting itinerary to visitors.
Be enthralled by the Butterfly Farm or the equally attractive Botanical Gardens. Take a walking tour of historic downtown Georgetown, with its Colonial heritage and then visit some of the tranquil Buddhist temples or if you are feeling brave, the Snake Temple, where pit vipers are coiled on the altar. For fantastic coastal views, cross the Penang Bridge which connects the two parts of the state. This is also the largest bridge in Asia.
Learn more about the island's past at the Penang Museum, which exhibits old photographs and maps of the area or enjoy the old setting of The Garage, which now houses shops and dining options. Catch the sunset at Gurney Drive, the best vantage point on the island, followed by a portion of 'hokkien mee', the prawn noodles from the popular hawker stalls.
